The TAG hooked on then climbed down into the interior of the aircraft. The old Bay paddle steamer "Weeroona" was on a picnic cruise to Sorrento when smoke was sighted and the crew of A2-2 were rescued and taken to Queenscliff. Wings were incompletely impregnated with red dope undercoat and had been stored on their leading edges with water inside 28/11/38 Struck wires and caught fire near Archerfield, Qld. “The aircraft of No 5 Squadron was stationed temporarily at Archerfield. On the morning of 28.11.38, the pilot, FlgOff M.J. Wiber called on the Commissioner of Police and stated that he intended to carry out a flight on this day and suggested that he take a Police Officer with him for the purpose of searching for a missing woman. Constable Young of the Water Police was detailed to accompany the aircraft. The aircraft left Archerfield at about 12.10 pm and proceeded to the vicinity of Alberton Ferry. It was seen soon afterwards following the course of the Albert River upstream. At 12.22 pm it collided with a span of high tension wires which cross the river near the Ferry. The time was established by the stopping of electric clocks in the area. The high tension wires are at a height of 50 ft above the water, held by towers 90 ft high on either side. After striking the wires, the aircraft appeared to fly normally for about 200 yards then veered sharply to the left and crashed into the south bank of the river, bursting into flames on impact. The aircraft was completely destroyed and all occupants (Flg Off M.J. Wiber, Aircraftsmen E.A. Everett and A.D. Milner and Const G.R. Young) were killed. Bursts from the second plane, right on our tail, riddled the rudder and the after section of the hull until it looked like sieve. Most of the tailplane struts were shot away. And we could see a line of bullet holes sawing off the port lower main plane. It seemed dollars to doughnuts that the old Seagull would be blown to pieces within a few seconds....... We were dead meat actually but they didn't seem to like our bullets. Or perhaps they thought we were done anyway.' Owing to some as yet unknown cause, he came in too close to the ship and crashed into the ship's port quarter just above the water line, breaking up and bursting into flames immediately.The second whaler as crash boat was immediately lowered and the first whaler was also sent away as a lifeboat. A motor surf boat from CHICAGO reached the spot where the aircraft had sunk first and succeeded in saving the observer, Sub Lt Jackson, and the air gunner. Flying Officer E.J. Rowan RAAF, the pilot, was not seen. While the boats were away, an air alarm was received and the ship went to 'Repeal Aircraft' stations. Both whalers were hoisted at 1220, the two survivors having been transferred from CHICAGO's boat. Fortunately no enemy aircraft were sighted." Dening, closed the throttle and the port float struck and dug in, causing the aircraft to turn on its back and sink within a few minutes. The four occupants escaped through the port window in the pilot's compartment as the main escape hatch had jammed. All were uninjured and were picked up 10 minutes later by a dinghy lowered from an RAAF lugger. The aircraft sank in 40 ft of water and is a total loss (RAAF Accident Report). HD874 is listed as a Saunders Roe built Walrus Mk.II. As such it should have a wooden fuselage. We can find no evidence supporting this however. The wreck recovered from Heard Island and now restored at the RAAF Museum certainly had a metal fuselage. Theories that it had its wooden fuselage replaced with a metal one don't hold water (excuse the pun). RAAF convention is such that if the fuselage of A2-20 (or A2-1 or A2-15) was used then the rebuilt aircraft would carry the identity of that fuselage.

Reason For Loss:
The aircraft crossed the coast of Brittany approximately 20 Kilometres west of Carantec. It is believed that the aircraft came under either French or German fire. The aircraft was hit and the pilot attempted to land in a field near Ploudaniel but hit an embankment. The aircraft caught fire and all four occupants were killed. After the aircraft crashed some local people came from Ploudaniel and removed the bodies from the burnt our aircraft and buried them in the local cemetery before the German army occupied their town.
After General De Gaulle had arrived safely in England on Monday 17th June 1940, he made a special request to the Prime Minister Winston Churchill, asking him to rescue his family from Brittany. Prime Minister was in agreement and he informed the British Admiralty on the same day to arrange the rescue. The same day the Admiralty made arranges with the RAF to supply a Sea Plane to take a S.0.E. Admiralty passenger Cptn. Norman Hope of the Intelligence Corp was a fluent French speaker.
Cptn. Hope himself would indicate where he wished to be landed and on instructions from the Prime Minister of Great Britain would endeavour to collect General Charles De Gaulle's wife and children and bring them back to the aircraft for passage to England. The mission was considered extremely dangerous and required volunteers, the Walrus crews drew lots to see who would go. Fl/Lt. John Bell and Sgt. Charles Harris, both Australians drew the lots. The Mission: The aircraft was fully armed ready to keep defensive watch at all times. On the 18th of June 1942 they took off at 03:00 from their base at RAF Mount Batten Plymouth to carry out the mission to rescue the family of General Charles De Gaulle from France. From the time of take off nothing was heard from the aircraft. The time of the return of the aircraft depended on whether Captain Hope could find the family and also on events on the Brittany coast. The Germans were expected to approach the vicinity by 15:00 hours on the 18th. On 19th June, a Motor Torpedo Boat 29, after embarking an interpreter and a skiff, dispatched from England to the same locality, to arrive off the main channel to Morlaix at 00:01 hours on 20th June.
The skiff was to be used to land the Captain Hope, who was to endeavour to find the De Gaulle family, already having moved from the family home at Colombey Deux Eglises a month previously and were living at Carantec on the North Coast of Brittany.
The Cptn. was to convoy them to the Motor Torpedo Boat. General De Gaulle had already escaped to England on 17th of June. Captain Hope was also ordered to make enquiries regarding the missing Walrus aircraft, a description of the crew having been provided. The Motor Torpedo Boat returned on 20th June, reporting that the interpreter had landed, but found the village already occupied by the Germans.

No. 10 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force was the only Australian squadron to serve continuously for the duration of the Second World War in Europe. It was a coastal command squadron mainly operating Sunderland's from Pembroke and Plymouth, with 6 U-Boat kills in WW2, it also operated a number of other amphibians including the Catalina's and Walrus's. They arrived at Pembroke Dock, Pembrokeshire on 3rd September 1939 and trained under RAAF Command. On 10th October 1940 they were placed under Coastal Command Control, for European War Operations. Then to Mount Batten, Plymouth, Devon on 1st April 1940.
