Several aircraft were either captured by Australian Forces including the Australian Flying Corps or claimed as War Trophies by the Australian Government from German forces, most notably the Deutsche Luftstreitkräfte (German Air Forces).
Some were captured intact or damaged during the course of the conflict, and many more were collected just after the Armistice. Some of these aircraft made it back to Australia and just a few have survived into preservation. At the conclusion of the conflict, 70 captured aircraft were 'reserved' for shipment back to Australia. It was realised that the shipping costs would be too high after a list of 35 planes had arrived at 2 ASD in the UK. The group was further reduced and 14 captured German Aircraft are listed as arriving in Australia. These aircraft were sent to the various states and some held in state or national collections. |
