During 1944 and 1945 46 Beauforts were converted to unarmed transports, officially Beaufort Mk.IX but generally known as Beaufreighters.
They received new serial numbers in the A9-701 to 746 range.

A9-701 Ex A9-14 now A9-701. 04/09/44 Allotted for modification from Mk V GR/T to Mk IX Transport (Spec 4/44) Renumbered A9-701 on completion. 14/12/44 Rec 1AD ex DAP. 13/03/45 a/c fitted with DDT Liquid Spraying equipment. 14/03/45 Rec 10CU (Communications Unit) ex 1AD.  01/11/45 Rec 8CU ex 10CU. 14/01/46 Allotted 1AD ex 8CU for storage. 15/01/46 Delivery suspended on requiring engine change. 18/01/46 flown to Port Moresby by F/O Patch and crew and returned. 8CU Disbanded 04/03/46.  11/03/46 Write off per File#09/16/3145 Minute #1 dated 14/02/46 (With A9-721). 
A9-702 Ex A9-17 now A9-702.  23/11/44 Rec 1AD ex DAP. Pratt and Whitney Twin Wasp S3C4-G Engines #6478 and #23352. A/c to be developed with prototype fitment of DDT Spray apparatus at 1AD.19/02/45 Rec 9CU (Communications Unit) ex 1AD. 1110hrs 26/02/45 accident when taking off on an authorised travel flight, when a/c swung to port after covering 250-300yards. Swing was corrected and straightened up in about 50 yards on a track some 10 feet to port of original track. After another 50 yards the a/c swung to starboard about 35 º's and travelled about 150-200yards practically straight when it commenced turning to port and the starboard wheel collapsed. After this swing to starboard the a/c started to drift to port and crossed a small trench about a foot deep, whereupon the a/c ground looped to port. Crew: Pilot: F/O Michael Beresford Woodham Serv#407089, Co-Pilot: Sqn Ldr Robert Owen Giles Serv#291433, and F/O C R Brown Serv#1528 Nav. Passengers: F/O Thomas Henry Bryant Serv#432476, F/O H A Cornwall Serv#402025, USAAF Passengers Sgt Rodgers and PFC Hathaway, T5 A Ways, and T5 J Kootz.  All uninjured. 20/03/45 Rec 10RSU ex 9CU.  Write off per File#09/16/2457 Minute #2 dated 22/03/45.
