operating a CareFlight medical evacuation
from Apia,
Western Samoa to Melbourne was about to land on Norfolk Island for a
planned refueling stop.
In deteriorating weather the pilots made
3 unsuccessful approaches and with fuel running out they carried out a successful landing on the water
5km SW of Norfolk Island
Airport.
The patient, their spouse, 2 medics and the pilots
evacuated safely.
They were rescued by boat and taken to the local
hospital for observation.
The aircraft sank and remains at a depth of 48
metres.
