The Agusta A109 LUH(NZ) is a training and light utility helicopter based on the A109E, acquired for training pilots and aircrew that will later fly the NH90 Medium Utility Helicopter and SH-2G Seasprite naval helicopter as well as performing light helicopter missions.

The Ministry of Defence acquisition project and the RNZAF has formed a Helicopter Transition Unit (HTU) to manage the operational and technical aspects of the introduction Into Service process for these helicopters.

The first two helicopters, one of which is a non flying airframe which will be used as a source of spares, arrived at RNZAF Base Ohakea in March 2011.

Operated by the HTU at Ohakea, the A109s replace the RNZAF’s ageing, piston powered Bell B47G-3B-2 Sioux trainers. They were acquired under a NZ$139 million contract signed in May 2008 for the acquisition of the five A109s, an additional A109 airframe to be used as a source of spares, a simulator and a spares and support package.

The New Zealand government has been considering acquiring a further three A109LUHs.
