Shot down by a JU88 intruder 4/03/45 near Langworth, Lincs while on a training exercise.

The following extract from the Highgate RSL website provides further details of the crew of No. 460 Squadron Lancaster NG 502 and the incident which saw it shot down:

The final act at Ladbergen was delayed for only one week, as on 3rd-4th March a slightly larger force of 222 aircraft from No. 5 Group set out with 1,000 tons of bombs. Weather was again poorer than expected at the target and the preliminary markers fell over a wide area. Good raid discipline in the face of apparently strengthened defences led to concentrated bombing of the most favourable cluster of target indicators, assessed as being close to the true aiming point. Each RAAF squadron sent 15 Lancasters, and, although crews were satisfied with their attacks, they suffered relatively heavily for the scrupulous way in which they pressed them home, the units between them losing four of the seven aircraft missing from the whole operation. Among the three crews lost by No. 467 were Wing Commander Langlois (416685), acting Commanding Officer, and Flying Officer Taylor (25299), the new gunnery leader. The bombers faced a further hazard on return to base, for this was the night when the Luftwaffe, in a desperate attempt to offset the declining effectiveness of its night-fighter defences over Germany, dispatched some 140 night fighters (mainly Ju-88’s) on long-range intruder tasks over Bomber Command bases. The Australians arrived at Waddington to find enemy fighters attacking the airfield. A bomb dump was set on fire but all the Lancasters landed safely.

A subsequent court of inquiry reported ‘The aircraft was returning from a sortie on the night of 23 October 1944 when it struck cloud up to 20,000 feet in which the icing index was high. The Pilot descended through the cloud on track and hit a tree 70 feet high in Houghton Hall Park. The aircraft was extensively damaged and burnt. The Rear Gunner Bergelin was alive and trapped in the rear turret seriously injured. He died in hospital the same night. The rest of the crew members were killed with the exception of Cannon who was unconscious under a tree all night and went unaided to Houghton Hall the next morning. He was admitted to Sick Quarters and recovered. The main cause of the accident was the weather with contributory factors being loss of the ASI and the pilot’s altimeter if static vent frozen. There is no mention of a crash of any sort in the ORBS or further recordings of PD259 in the ORBS after 29/30-Aug-1944. The aircraft was posted as missing, It is believed to have broken up mid-flight at 10,000 feet on the night of August 31, 1944, on a flight from Waddington with the loss of all seven crew on-board and was later discovered to have crashed near Kingussie during a training exercise.

The RAAF crew who died were pilot, Flying Officer Robert Beddoe (21), from Elsterwick, Victoria; navigator, Flight Sergeant Frederic Walker (32), St Ives, New South Wales; mid-upper gunner, Flight Sergeant Stanley Abbott (21), Cottesloe, West Australia; wireless operator, Flight Sergeant Terrence Dent (21), Walkeston, Queensland; rear gunner, Flight Sergeant Bevil Glover (23), Malvern, Victoria, and bomb aimer David Ryan (30), of Fairfield, Victoria.

One theory is that the bomber was struck by lightning while on a mission the previous night over German-occupied Koningsberg, now known as Kaliningrad in the Western Russian enclave between Poland and Lithuania.

Another possibility is that the plane was hit by lightning after encountering a fierce storm over the Highlands, leading to the catastophic failure of all four engines while on the training exercise.

Also on board was Glaswegian RAF flight engineer, Warrant Officer George Middleton, (37), who may have parachuted to safety in time from the doomed plane, but tragically could then have fallen to his death while trying to fetch help.

An open parachute was found at the crash scene by rescuers, and his body was recovered from the bottom of a cliff.

Part of a rear bomb bay, an aircraft camera, the flight engineer’s instrument panel and a section of the rear gun turret were amongst almost 50 items recovered from the wreck and taken to the aircraft’s former base for display.

Aircraft Serial Model Aircraft History
EE202 Mk.III This was a 12 Sqn, RAF aircraft (PH-K) being flown by the CO 460 Sqn Wing Commander R.A. Norman DSO, DFC, who was shot down by a night fighter on the first operation of his second tour on 8 October in an attack on Hanover.
Wing Commander Norman became POW and command of 460 Sqn passed to Wing Commander F.A. Arthur DFC, who had also completed his first tour. Arthur had the distinction of being the first Australian and only the second navigator in Bomber Command to lead a squadron.
We suspect that EE202 was on an informal loan from 12 Sqn, RAF to 460 Sqn for Wing Commander Norman's mission.
