AK634   P-40? Mk.? Served with 450 Sqn, RAAF; Coded OK-M,
New Zealander Flt Lt John Edwin Ashley 'Willy' Williams, DFC made all his claims during his tour with No 450 Sqn in the summer of 1942. Flying this aircraft (which carried a personal marking on the nose) on an early morning armed reconnaissance patrol on 5 July 1942, he came across a single Ju88 from I./LG1 and shot it down for his second victory. In October Williams became CO of No 450, but his tenure was brief for on the 31st he was Shot down and made a POW. Sent to Germany, he participated in the 'Great Escape' from Stalag Luft III (Sagan, Germany - now in Poland) of 25 March 1944, and was one of those later executed by the Gestapo after being recaptured.
Having previously served with No 112 Sqn AK634 was struck off charge on 26 April 1944.

29/04/1944 Destroyed on the ground at Cutella, Italy,
"This aircraft was strafed ad set alight. The fuselages from the cockpit back was completely destroyed. The mainplanes were slightly burnt at the centre section & the engine and airscrew were undamaged."
SOC 31 May 1944.

On the 29th of April 1944, American pilots flying four P-47 Thunderbolts (US 325th Fighter Group) mistakenly strafed Cutella airfield, thinking it was a German base.  At the time, engine fitters Corporal Slim Moore and LAC Kev Harris were servicing a Kittyhawk in the dispersal bay next to two other Kittyhawks (all with 500lb bombs loaded).  Bullets from the P-47s set one of the Kittyhawks alight, but before the flames spread, these two men, ignoring the possibility of the bomb exploding, unshackled it and dragged it clear of the burning aircraft.  Then they started-up and taxied the other two Kittyhawks away from the fire (one aircraft being the personal mount of 239 Wing Commander, Brian Eaton).  By doing so they helped avoid a catastrophic explosion on the Squadron apron area right next to the Operations Tent.  Slim and Kev were Mentioned in Despatches for their bravery.  The Commanding Officer of the US 325th Fighter Group later visited to make formal apology for this incident.
