2/08/1943, Hampden torpedo bombers of No 455 Squadron RAAF attacked a convoy off the Norwegian coast. This aircraft (L4105/D) suffered massive flak damage to its tail - half the elevator was blown away, the starboard fin twisted and the port rudder fouled by debris. The crew were forced to lash a rope around the rudder bar and took turns helping the pilot, Flying Officer Iain Masson, hold the aircraft straight as they limped back to Leuchars for a crash-landing.

07-08/11/1941, Lost on patrol near Aachen-Marstrich. (Previously reported as Cologne).
Came down in Belgium near Namur.
According to the pilot:
"Having carried out low level attatcks with bombs and M/G's on the searchlight belt Aachen-Marstrich, I was retruning to base low level. As was later discovered the Met wind was wrong due to freak weather conditions and our position was some miles south of that estimate. This brought me into the foothills of the Ardennes, where at 350ft, I collided with a chimney stack, tearing off the lower portion of fuselage and breaking the fuel supply. The motors out, I had to crash land."
"My observer and wireless operator escaped with me from the wrecked A/C. The A/G was torn off in his compartment by the effect of the collision, but was later reported in hospital and later as recovered and in one of the N.C.O.'s camps by another prisoner."
"Crash landed caused by collision with chimney while while tending to wounded members of crew and taken prisoner by member of Feldpolice"

Loss of Hampden AE308 ( www.aircrewremembered.com )

Took off at 12.05 hrs from Swinderby to lay mines off the Frisian Islands in broad daylight. 46 aircraft took part in this operation made up of 33 Hampdens and 13 Manchesters. The only aircraft lost on this raid was 455 Squadron Hampden AE308. Under his own initiative Hauptman Helmut Lent of Stab II./NJG2 (already an ace with 30 kills at this time) took off from Terschelling Island and under radar guidance closed in with three other Bf110’s. The flight spotted the minelaying operation and Hptm Lent  attacked AE308 over the North Sea, 70 kilometres West of Terschelling and shot it down at 15.10 hrs. All crew were lost and are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

"This aircraft and a number of others were selected shortly after the war for historical purposes. Most of these aircraft were housed at the RAAF base in Canberra until the air force insisted they be moved. No provision had been made to provide storage facilities for these aircraft and eventually most of them were sold.

The Hampden was purchased by a scrap metal dealer in September 1954. The aircraft described as a Hampden TB Mark I, serial No. AE384 fitted with Pegasus XVIII engines, It had been erected in September 1941 and had flown a total of 388 hours 25 mins."

Aircraft believed to have been
scrapped without ever being erected in Australia.
