returning from reconnaissance of Buna Area after receiving enemy AA
machinegun fire and damage. When coming into landing at Dobodura NG,
the hydraulic system failed, causing flaps and Diving brakes to
revert to normal position, forcing a high speed landing which
resulted in the aircraft overshooting and running off strip. Pilot
and Observer, F/O I C Curtiss and F/Sgt H W Phillips were both
un-injured. Aircraft suffered bent airscrew, both mainplanes damaged

when the aircraft crashed at Island Lagoon, a salt pan some 120
miles north west of Port Augusta, South Australia, whilst on route
to Strauss Strip NT whilst being flown by 1AD Test and Ferry Flight
Crew. During this part of ferry flight, due to low cloud ceiling of
1000feet, the pilot tried to come down below mist at 450 feet. The
aircraft had appeared to impacted inverted. The crew, W/O George
Frederick Quinn Serv#416999 (Ex 77Sqn P-40 pilot in 1943)and F/Sgt
J.J. Hayes Serv#409406 were both killed. Both buried at Port Pirie

PNG during a travel flight from No4 Strip Nadzab to Madang. Weather
closed in when attempting flight through the mountain gap near Dumpu.
Unable to continue, the pilot spent nearly one and a half hours
looking for the coast when they signaled a nearby C-47 using two red Verey flares. The C-47 escorted the pilot
to the coast. With the fuel exhausted near Alexishhafen Strip, the
pilot force landed on a road. The crew were P/O P. H. Sanders

to develop a deep spiral dive after receiving damage to its
Starboard wing. The aircraft struck the ground and caught fire on

station at Pascoe Vale Victoria Australia. Acquired by a syndicate
of three people. The aircraft was restored magnificently and was
then registered as VH-WIR from 26/08/86. It was painted silver with
a black anti glare panel yellow stripes around the wings and
fuselage and Kangaroo roundels on the sides. A reflection of the
dedication by the syndicate. Outside of the scope of this website,
the follow-on history will show one of the members advertising this
aircraft on E-Bay for a stated reserve amount resulting in numerous
challenges in 2007-2008. The new owner in accordance with the E-Bay
advertising guidelines, was successful in obtaining this aircraft
following a successful High Court challenge which upheld his appeal
of the E-Bay Guidelines. The aircraft resided in Parafield, South
Australia and was flown regularly in 2009/10.
A20-652 was flown from Parafield to Caloundra Qld by Matthew
Denning. It became the first aircraft for the Queensland Air Museum
to fly in to Caloundra on delivery to the museum since it moved
there. Following a flying display it was handed over to the museum
at Caloundra on 18/12/10.

aircraft for aerial crop-dusting with Marshall Spreading Service,
Albury, NSW, which did not eventuate, before being purchased by Mr Baird of Geelong. Purchased by Mr R
Hourigan and Mr P Capron in 1968, A20-687 was transported to
Moorabbin for restoration 17/08/68. Over the next eight years, an
extensive restoration of the aircraft was undertaken, including the
fitment of operational equipment applicable to a CA-9 Wirraway
operated in the dive-bomber role. Restoration of the aircraft was
completed in 1977 and A20-561 was placed on loan to the RAAF Museum
for display in July 1977. The RAAF Museum purchased this aircraft in
May 1999 for display as A20-561 coded QE-B of 4 Sqn RAAF.
