Accident 1530 hours 01/04/42 at Benalla Aerodrome when A20-512 piloted by P/O Watchorn collided with A20-502 piloted by P/O Dickson on take-off whilst trying to avoid landing aircraft, A32-2. Damage to tail of aircraft. Repaired. Back in service 06/04/42. Coded with 5 Sqn 08/05/44 as BF-O, Now on 07/04/45 coded as BF-D (with nearly 100 hours and carried out 953 sorties) and during 01/46. This aircraft has no entries on card post 22/11/42 until 04/01/46 when the aircraft was to be allocated to be delivered directly from No 5 Squadron Army Co-op Bougainville directly to SHQ Canberra by sea and road for the AWM. RAAF approval to covert to components on site 07/01/46. Aircraft was destroyed 10/01/46 at Piva. SOC 10/01/46.

Aircraft left Batchelor Strip 1050hrs on a anti-submarine sortie between Darwin and Cape Forde Following a 24hour search by aircraft, the aircraft wreckage was sighted crashed near Mount Litchfield Station Northern Territory Australia by SqnLdr R S McDonald and F/Sgt Holmes 12Sqn in A20-542. A Australian Army Party from Litchfield Station found the crew, P/O P. R. F. Hughes and SGT S. V. Corcoran, had been both killed on impact. Wreckage salvaged by 1RSU 10/10/42. Held by 1RSU 05/11/42. Accident 1120hrs 23 June 1942, aircraft crashed into Lake Victoria some 50 miles west of Mildura during shadow shooting , when the aircraft flicked off a steep turn (stalled). The crew; Sgt Arthur Robert Ruge Serv#405424 and LAC George Henry Moore Serv#15508 both killed. A search of the lake failed to find the plane and both men are still listed as having no known graves. With 5Sqn destroyed when a 7Sqn Hudson collided with this aircraft on landing at Laverton 26/03/42. A20-527 on issue to USAFIA was also damaged. That Hudson was A16-139 Coded "G". Accident occurred during bad weather and poor visibility, when forced landing 26/03/42 near Croydon Victoria. Hudson Crew F/O A E Adams Serv#692P/O B L Hancock Serv#406481(Injured ribs), Sgt B R Bright Serv#407841 and Sgt B K Chandler Serv#21351. No crew were in A20-515 and A20-527. A20-516 CA-9 717 Received 1AD ex CAC 27/01/42 and allocated to 23Sqn 28/01/42. Fitted with Armour and self sealing tanks and finally issued to 23Sqn 06/04/42. Forced landing on 11/05/42 with damage to port and starboard flaps and centre section skin damage at Archerfield. Repaired and in service 23Sqn 20/04/42. Issued to 3AD ex 23Sqn 12/08/42. 16/08/42 in flight loss of oil and returned to 3AD 27/08/42. Allocated and issued to 24Sqn by 14/09/42. 17/01/43 force landed at Richmond Airbase damaging airscrew, oil cooler and Flaps. Pilot was F/O H R Baldwin Ser#2624 and WAG was P/O F W Walsh Ser#34685 were un-injured. 28/03/43 involved in Mid Air Collision during formation practice in adverse weather near Chipping Norton NSW with A20-104. A20-516 was cut in half. Pilot was Sgt. G R Campbell Ser#420137 who managed to bail out, but struck his head on falling debris and was killed. Passenger was F/O T Britten A& ASD Serv#06505, 1 Fighter Sector who was slightly injured during collision made a successful bale out into a small paddock. Received 2AD ex 24Sqn 05/04/43 and approved for conversion 16/04/43.

Stewart Serv#408505 and Passenger P/O A R Reek. Repaired. Accident 12/09/44 when aircraft ground looped on landing at Mareeba. Damage to airscrew and starboard mainplane. Pilot; P/O J B McLean not injured. Repaired. Accident 11.30hrs 06/11/44, when the aircraft swung off the runway, due to severe crosswind after landing at Mareeba Aerodrome from a flight from Cairns. Despite pilot trying to avert collision with A27-1, it struck both the aircraft and fleeing crew, killing two personnel from 5 Communications Unit who were serving their 5CU Vengeance, A27-1. They were F/OFF R. McTier and WOFF N. J. Burns. Another 5CU member, F/Sgt Hadden dropped down and let aircraft pass over his body, suffering only abrasions. Crew of Wirraway A20-517; F/O Christian Rassmussen Serv#33273 and Captain I W Hill Serv#QX4609 AIF (1ALG) suffered minor injuries. (2 Photos held post incident) Aircraft Rec by 6CRD 30/11/44. Accident 1705hrs 12/05/42 when aircraft suffered engine failure, resulting in pilot making a forced landing at mouth of Pimpama River, south of Brisbane, Queensland. Accident 05/05/42 Canberra when taxying during test, right brake seized causing aircraft to tip on airscrew. Slight damage. Pilot may have been P/O E I found. NFDs. Repaired. Flown to Port Moresby 02/11/42 by F/O T H Saunders and F/Sgt C Hadley in No 2 Flight from Kingaroy Qld. Flown by P/O J S Archer and F/O A K Avery on Recce over Gona 20/11/42. Operational Loss 1100 hrs 21/11/42 on survey landing a Wairopi Strip when aircraft struck soft patch on strip and loss lift, causing it to stall and loose lift halfway along runway, causing a fast involuntary landing run past the end of strip and then striking trees at 80 miles per hour. Aircraft came to rest on nose and port wing. Crew; F/O T H Saunders and F/Sgt D E W Bains Serv#21899 slightly injured. Despite this, both crew trekked back to Kokoda. They were collected individually by two 4 Sqn Wirraways on the 24/11/42 in A20-183 and A20-176 and ferried back to Berry Strip. The airframe was to be salvaged by 15RSU. Whilst avoiding another un-identified aircraft on landing, the port wing struck the ground and dug in, causing the aircraft to ground loop and to substantially damaged. Accident 20/03/42 at Laverton when aircraft was parked in hanger, it was damaged by a out of controlled truck which struck the hanger doors. One of the doors struck the rear of the aircraft. Mid Air Accident 1400hrs 22/08/43 when the A20-537 and A20-549 were performing air combat practice some 5 miles east of the 110 degree strip near Mareeba, QLD. After climbing to 8000 feet A20-537 was overtaking A20-549 and slid underneath while A20-549 was performing a break away. The pilot of A20-549 throttled back expecting A20-537 to overshoot, but in doing so, A20-537 splurged up colliding with A20-549's starboard wing. The pilot of A20-537 felt something striking his tail as his aircraft went above A20-549. A20-537 went into a spin, forcing the pilot to bale out. Pilot, F/O John S Archer Serv#409285 was not injured. (Note: Pilot of A20-103 that shot down the only Zero by a Wirraway on 26/12/42) The pilot of A20-549,F/O R R Paxton Serv#402133, now also in a spin due to damage to his starboard wing, baled out from a height of 3000 feet after trying corrective control methods. Mid Air Accident 1400hrs 22/08/43 when the A20-537 and A20-549 were performing air combat practice some 5 miles east of the 110 degree strip near Mareeba, QLD. After climbing to 8000 feet A20-537 was overtaking A20-549 and slid underneath while A20-549 was performing a break away. The pilot of A20-549 throttled back expecting A20-537 to overshoot, but in doing so, A20-537 splurged up colliding with A20-549's starboard wing. The pilot of A20-537 felt something striking his tail as his aircraft went above A20-549. A20-537 went into a spin, forcing the pilot to bale out. Pilot, F/O John S Archer Serv#409285 was not injured. Mid air Accident 08/08/43 when A20-584 collided with A20-215 following a diving attack on formation flying exercise. The aircraft pulled up under A20-215 and collided and then partially disintegrated. Both aircraft crashed within one and half miles of each other. A20-585 veered off the intended path as A20-613, having just completed a instrument landing, saw the approaching A20-585. The solo pilot tried to taxy to a position so that the other aircraft could see it. After collision, A20-585 burst into flames, trapping the Student pilot. Sgt Conway, after being knock unconscious initially managed to extricate himself before the fire reached his cockpit. The pilot, Sgt R W Henshaw, from 1AD Ferry Flight, after landing by parachute successfully, walked towards Yea before being found. SOC 11/06/42. Accident 17/08/42 when aircraft struck high tension power lines whilst pilot was carrying out an un-authorised low flying some 3 miles north of The Rock on the main road. Crew; F/Lt V Polley and F/O R Paxton not injured. Aircraft was landed safely. Damage to lower cowl and port centre section leading edge. Repaired and in service 26/10/42. Accident 23/03/43 whilst taxying A20-484, LAC Fenton, collided with parked Wirraway A20-597. Damage to A20-597 not stated. In service 24/05/43 after engine repairs.
